The southern brown bandicoot is a marsupial associated with dense vegetation close to the ground. It uses scrub and ground cover that allow it to hide between nocturnal feeding trips. It occurs in southern Australia.
It eats insects, earthworms, other invertebrates, fungi and plant parts. While feeding it digs small pits to reach food in the soil. Moving the substrate is a consequence of its daily search for food.
It is usually active at night, although in cooler conditions it may also emerge by day. It builds shelter from available vegetation. The offspring develop attached to the female's teats before beginning independent excursions outside the shelter.
