Southern bottlenose whale — size comparison — facts and sources

The southern bottlenose whale lives in deep Southern Ocean and subantarctic waters. It has a short beak and bulging forehead; older males have an especially pronounced melon.

It dives for squid and deep-water fish. Long submergences limit direct observation, leaving many aspects of its life unknown. It is a separate species from the similar northern bottlenose whale of the North Atlantic.
