The South American coati (Nasua nasua) is a member of the raccoon family. It inhabits forests, scrub and their edges. An elongated, mobile snout, powerful claws and a long, usually banded tail give it a distinctive outline while travelling on the ground and in trees.
It is omnivorous. It searches litter for invertebrates, eats fruit and uses small vertebrates and eggs. Smell helps it find food hidden in the substrate. Mobile ankle joints allow headfirst descents down trunks.
Females and young form groups, while adult males often live alone. Much activity occurs by day. Animals maintain contact while travelling, and raised tails are clearly visible above low vegetation.
