The Somali wild ass (Equus africanus somaliensis) is a subspecies of African wild ass from the Horn of Africa. Its natural range is associated with Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. It inhabits rocky deserts and dry scrub. A pale grey coat contrasts with the pale belly, dark dorsal stripe and horizontal leg stripes.
It eats tough grasses, leaves and other desert plants, moving between scattered feeding grounds and water. It forms loose groups, and adult males often defend territories. The African wild ass is the ancestor of the domestic donkey.
