Snow leopard — size comparison — facts and sources

The snow leopard inhabits rocky slopes and high Asian mountains. Dark rosettes and spots on its thick, pale fur provide camouflage among rocks. Broad, fur-covered paws help on snow, while a very long tail aids balance on steep ground. During rest, it may wrap the tail around its body to reduce heat loss.

It hunts mountain ungulates, marmots and smaller animals, approaching discreetly with the help of uneven terrain. Activity is especially common around dawn and dusk. Usually solitary, it uses a range whose size depends on food availability and the landscape.

Scent marks and scratches on rocks help communicate with neighbours and potential mates. The female raises cubs alone in a sheltered den. As they grow, they accompany her and learn to move through demanding terrain.
