Smooth newt — size comparison — facts and sources
The smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) is a salamander of Europe and parts of western Asia. It occupies ponds, gardens, meadows and damp forests. Its slight build distinguishes it from the larger great crested newt.
A laterally flattened tail assists swimming; outside breeding adults use damp shelters around ponds. It enters water in spring but often feeds on land during the rest of the year. Breeding males have a low, wavy crest.
It eats insects, snails and other small invertebrates. Females lay eggs on aquatic plants. Adults overwinter in sheltered sites, including beneath roots and in crevices.
