Slow worm — size comparison — facts and sources

The slow worm (Anguis fragilis) is a legless European lizard living secretively in litter and low vegetation. It inhabits meadows, gardens, scrub and forest edges. Smooth scales give a sheen, while movable eyelids help distinguish it from snakes.

Much prey is found close to the ground among damp plants and dead material.

It eats slugs, snails, earthworms and other invertebrates. Females bear live young. If attacked, it can shed its tail.
