The sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekii) is an antelope of sub-Saharan wetlands, inhabiting swamps, reedbeds and papyrus stands. Long, spreading hooves and flexible joints distribute weight on soft ground. Males darken with age, and pale stripe and spot numbers vary.
It eats grasses, sedges, leaves, shoots and aquatic plants. Dense vegetation provides food as well as cover during rest and travel.
Secretive, it usually lives alone or in small groups. When threatened it may submerge its body, leaving its muzzle at the surface to breathe.
