The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The greater siren is an aquatic amphibian chiefly active at night. By day it hides in dense bottom vegetation. It eats varied invertebrates, including insects, crustaceans and molluscs, plus small fish; algae have also been found in examined digestive tracts.
When water dries it may bury itself in mud and form a covering that reduces water loss, surviving adverse conditions with greatly reduced activity. Besides external gills it has lungs and can breathe at the surface. Its elongated body has only small forelimbs and no hindlegs.
