Siberian chipmunk — size comparison — facts and sources

The Siberian chipmunk inhabits northern Asian forests from Russia to China, Korea and Japan. It spends much time on the ground but can also climb trees. It uses burrows and sheltered places beside rocks and roots. Local populations outside its native area arose from captive escapes.

It feeds by day, gathering seeds, fruit, fungi and other available foods. It also eats insects and small vertebrates. It hides some food in soil or stores it in its burrow. During winter torpor it periodically wakes to use accumulated supplies.

The female cares for young initially remaining in an underground nest. They later accompany her while foraging and seek their own areas. Short calls may signal danger. Facing predators it uses vigilance, agility and rapid access to shelter.
