The siamang has dense black fur, extremely long arms and no tail. Its distinctive expandable throat sac becomes conspicuous during calling. A skin membrane joins the second and third toes.
It lives high in the forest canopies of Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. It moves by swinging its arms between branches, a form of locomotion called brachiation. An adult pair and their young maintain contact through loud, coordinated songs. The male helps care for offspring. It eats fruit, leaves and flowers. Forest clearance separates tree crowns on which these apes depend for daily movement.
