Short-tailed shrew — size comparison — facts and sources

The northern short-tailed shrew inhabits damp forests, thickets and field margins in North America. It moves along passages hidden beneath leaves, in soil and under snow, also using tunnels made by other small mammals.

It hunts mainly invertebrates but may catch small vertebrates. Secretions from its salivary glands help subdue prey. Surplus food, including snails and beetles, may be stored for later.

It remains active throughout the year. It spends most of its time on or below ground, although it can climb. Its nests lie in sheltered tunnels, beneath stones or logs.
