The short-tail stingray lives in temperate waters off southern Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Bottom-associated, it can also cross open water. Its broad, thick disc is roughly diamond-shaped.

A short, powerful tail tapers towards the spine, distinguishing it from very long-tailed species. Smooth skin and small eyes contribute to its appearance. It finds crustaceans, molluscs and fish near the bottom, moving through undulations of broad pectoral fins.
