Short-finned pilot whale — size comparison — facts and sources

The short-finned pilot whale inhabits tropical and temperate deep-ocean waters. It has a rounded head, dark body and broad-based dorsal fin. Its pectoral flippers are shorter than the long-finned pilot whale’s.

It lives in closely bonded groups, often containing several dozen individuals. It dives deeply for food, chiefly cephalopods. Animals maintain vocal contact while travelling, and lasting family relationships influence group composition and behaviour.
