Shepherd’s beaked whale — size comparison — facts and sources

Shepherd’s beaked whale is a rarely observed cetacean of cool Southern Hemisphere waters. It has an elongated beak and irregular paler flank streaks. Its dentition is distinctive: functional teeth occur in both upper and lower jaws in both sexes.

It hunts bottom-dwelling fish, squid and crabs during deep dives. Much knowledge comes from stranded specimens. Social life, movements and reproduction are considerably less well documented than body structure.
