Leptailurus serval
The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The serval uses grasslands, often near wetlands. Tall vegetation provides cover and conceals numerous small mammals. Long legs help it move through grass, while large ears help locate prey without seeing it directly.
It hunts mainly small animals. After listening carefully it can leap and pin prey down with its front paws. It travels through its territory, alternating active food searching with rest in sheltered places.
It usually lives alone, and the female rears kittens in a retreat. The young gradually learn to recognise sounds and practise hunting leaps. Scent marks help organise contact between adults.
