Serotine bat — size comparison — facts and sources
The serotine is a relatively large European bat with a dark face and brown fur. It often uses buildings as roosts. At dusk it hunts over open areas and beside woodland. Broad wings allow turns and short glides.
It may chew large beetles in flight or at a resting place. Females form maternity colonies, and the young gradually learn independent flight. It uses echolocation to navigate changing surroundings. In winter activity decreases and it uses sheltered retreats.
The name Cnephaeus serotinus appears in more recent works; the older Eptesicus serotinus remains common in the literature.
