The secretarybird is an African bird of prey with exceptionally long legs. It has grey plumage, black feathers behind the head and bare orange skin around the eyes. On savannas and other open ground, it spends much of the day walking and looking over the grass.
As it walks, it flushes insects, lizards and small mammals. Larger prey, including snakes, is subdued with rapid kicks. Its diet depends on availability and is much broader than snakes alone. Pairs may cover large areas, stopping where food is plentiful.
Despite hunting on foot, secretarybirds fly well. They roost in trees and build large stick nests. Both parents supply food to chicks, which remain in the nest for a long time before becoming capable of moving independently across the savanna.
