The savannah monitor (Varanus exanthematicus) is a stocky reptile of African savannas, open woodland and rocky ground. It has a broad head and powerful, sharp-clawed limbs. It searches the ground surface and hiding places for food.

It chiefly eats invertebrates, including insects and molluscs. A forked tongue collects scent information, and activity follows seasonal food availability. It uses burrows and other shelters. Females lay eggs in soil.
