The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The sandfish (Scincus scincus) is a lizard of sandy North African and Middle Eastern deserts. It inhabits dunes and loose desert sand. Smooth skin and a wedge-shaped snout reduce resistance while burrowing.
It moves beneath sand through body undulations, as though swimming. Subsurface concealment reduces exposure to heat and shelters it from predators.
It eats chiefly insects and other small animals. Active by day, it nevertheless remains unseen much of the time. It can detect vibrations from potential prey movements.
