Alpine salamander — size comparison — facts and sources

The Alpine salamander is a mountain amphibian of the Alps and parts of the Balkans. The typical form has glossy, entirely black skin, a slender body and a well-developed tail. Some distinct populations differ in colour, so a black appearance does not describe every form without exception.

It lives in cool, damp forests, among rocks and on mountain meadows. It hides beneath stones, wood and in crevices. It emerges more readily in high humidity, seeking small invertebrates.

Its reproduction is unusual: the female gives birth to fully metamorphosed young. Development occurs inside the mother's body, so the offspring need no external water body for a larval stage.
