The moustached tamarin inhabits lowland tropical forests of Amazonia. It has a distinctive white moustache against dark fur; its long tail is not prehensile. It lives in groups and feeds by day among branches. It may form mixed groups with other tamarins that search for food in slightly different ways.
It regularly visits trees supplying fruit and nectar. It uses short, broad hands when obtaining insects; group members share care of the young. Mutual grooming strengthens relationships within the group. Encounters between neighbouring groups may lead to disputes over access to food trees.
