Sable — size comparison — facts and sources

The sable inhabits forested northern Eurasia. Dense stands, dead wood and natural retreats provide resting places and shelter from harsh weather. It uses smell and hearing when searching for prey. In unfavourable conditions it may remain in its retreat for extended periods.

It feeds mainly on small mammals, birds and eggs. It may also take fish and, when prey is scarce, supplement its food with berries, seeds and other plant parts. Stores of hunted animals kept in a shelter help it wait out periods that impede feeding.

Activity timing changes with season and local conditions. Daytime hunting has also been observed.
