Rusty-spotted cat — size comparison — facts and sources

The rusty-spotted cat occurs in India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. It uses wet and dry forests, scrub and rocky places and has also been observed in human-altered landscapes. Dense vegetation and gaps between rocks provide shelter and cover while travelling.

It is active mainly at night. By day it rests in hollow trunks, trees or dense cover. It climbs well, although it probably obtains much of its food on the ground. Described prey includes rodents, birds, insects, lizards and frogs; dietary details remain poorly known.

When threatened it may shelter in a tree or among boulders. Information on wild behaviour and reproduction is scarce. Most detailed knowledge of rearing young comes from captivity.
