Rough-skinned newt — size comparison — facts and sources
The rough-skinned newt (Taricha granulosa) inhabits damp western North American forests and freshwater breeding sites. A brown back contrasts with an orange belly usually concealed from above. Threatened animals reveal this warning colour, advertising highly toxic skin secretions.
Outside breeding it may live on land in sheltered damp places, returning to water for reproduction.
Males then change skin texture and tail shape. Food includes small invertebrates and other small animals. Females lay eggs individually. Larvae develop in water and subsequently metamorphose.
