The Roborovski hamster inhabits sandy Asian semi-deserts and steppes. Loose ground facilitates burrowing, with entrances sometimes on dune slopes among sparse vegetation.
It gathers food and carries it to shelter in cheek pouches. In the wild it uses seeds and available small invertebrates.
It is secretive and usually avoids direct contact. It may live alone or temporarily in pairs. Wild animals have sandy colour without a dorsal stripe.
