Ring-tailed vontsira — size comparison — facts and sources
The ring-tailed vontsira has a slender, reddish body, short legs and a bushy tail with alternating dark and chestnut rings. Rounded ears and a pointed muzzle give it a mongoose-like appearance, but it belongs to the distinct Madagascan family Eupleridae.
Endemic to Madagascar, it inhabits the island’s forests. It moves readily on the ground and can climb trees. It may be active by day. It hunts small vertebrates and invertebrates, supplementing its diet with fruit. Scent is among its ways of signalling presence.
