Ribbon seal — size comparison — facts and sources

The ribbon seal lives in the North Pacific and adjoining Arctic. It spends much of the year offshore but uses pack ice in spring for breeding, nursing and moulting.

Adult males have broad pale bands on dark fur; young look different. On ice it moves by alternating foreflipper strokes and rocking its body. Seasonal ice availability determines where it can rest and rear offspring.
