The black and rufous sengi inhabits East African forests. Its front is reddish and its rear black. Long legs allow rapid escape.
It eats invertebrates taken from beneath leaves and the ground surface. A mobile snout and tongue help reach small prey, while leaf litter provides both feeding grounds and material for a sheltered nest. It belongs to sengis, a mammal group separate from true shrews.
