Rhesus macaque — size comparison — facts and sources

The rhesus macaque occurs in South and East Asia. It inhabits forests and open landscapes but can also live near settlements. Trees provide rest and shelter, while some food is gathered on the ground.

It eats fruit, roots, green plant parts, invertebrates and other small animals. Near people it also uses crops and easily accessible resources. Diet composition changes seasonally. Travelling together helps the group find places offering food and cover.

It lives in groups containing females, males and young. Hierarchy, alliances and grooming affect daily relationships. The mother usually cares for one infant, which initially clings to her body. As it grows, it practises movement and social contact through play and observation of other group members.
