The New Caledonian giant gecko is endemic to New Caledonia and among the largest living geckos. Grey, brown and greenish patches blend with bark, making resting animals easily overlooked.

It inhabits tropical forests, using trunks, branches and hollows, chiefly at night. Broad toes grip surfaces securely. Its varied diet includes insects, other small animals and canopy fruit.

Size and appearance depend on origin, so individuals from different islands are not identical. It may reach approximately thirty-five centimetres. Females lay two eggs at a time.
