Reef manta ray — size comparison — facts and sources

The reef manta ray inhabits tropical reefs, lagoons and channels of the Indo-Pacific. Broad pectoral fins move like wings, while lobes beside its mouth guide water into it. Belly spots form individual patterns used to recognise animals.

It feeds on zooplankton and other small organisms in open water. It often returns to particular feeding sites. Productive currents near reefs can attract several mantas at once, although their presence changes with food availability.
