The red-rumped agouti is a ground-dwelling inhabitant of tropical forests in northeastern South America. It also uses farmland adjoining forest. Vegetation cover allows it to vanish quickly, while access to fruiting trees determines regular feeding sites.
It eats fruit, nuts and seeds. It turns food in its front paws and opens it with strong incisors. It buries some seeds for later. Stores it fails to recover or eat may germinate, so daily foraging contributes to forest regeneration.
Agoutis are active mainly by day, including dawn and dusk. They form pairs, and breeding need not be restricted to one season. Young are born furred with open eyes and soon move independently. Vigilance and rapid escape help avoid numerous forest predators.
