Red-ruffed lemur — size comparison — facts and sources

The red ruffed lemur inhabits forests of Madagascar's Masoala Peninsula. It spends most of its life in tree crowns, finding food and resting sites there. The Antainambalana River separates its range from areas occupied by related black-and-white ruffed lemurs.

It feeds by day, selecting mainly fruit, nectar and pollen. When fruit is scarce it supplements its diet with leaves and seeds. Visiting flowers, it may carry pollen between them.

Social organisation is flexible. During food abundance individuals may form larger groups that split while feeding. Loud calls signal danger and group location. The young initially remain at a chosen site while adults travel between it and food trees.
