Red panda — size comparison — facts and sources
The red panda lives in Asian mountain forests with dense bamboo undergrowth. It has reddish fur, pale facial markings and a long ringed tail. Fur on its feet provides protection from the cold.
Flexible ankles and partly retractable claws help it move along branches and descend trunks head first. It feeds mainly on bamboo leaves and tender shoots, supplementing them with fruit, insects and other small foods. An enlarged wrist bone helps it hold stems, functioning as an extra thumb.
