The red-necked wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus) is a medium-sized marsupial of eastern Australia and Tasmania. It inhabits eucalypt forests, scrub and their grassy edges. Its grey or brownish fur has a warmer shade on the neck and shoulders, giving the species its name.
It feeds mainly on grasses and other herbaceous plants. It uses open feeding grounds while staying close to vegetation cover. Most activity usually falls in cooler periods. The hindlimbs enable hopping, while the tail provides balance and support during slow movement.
Wallabies may live alone or in loose aggregations. The young is born at an early developmental stage and grows in the female's pouch, gradually beginning to explore the surroundings.
