Red fox — size comparison — facts and sources

The red fox is widespread across Europe, Asia, North America and northern Africa. It lives in tundra, forests, farmland and cities. Slender legs, mobile ears and a bushy tail give it a familiar outline. Silver and cross colour forms also occur.

An opportunistic omnivore, it eats rodents, insects, fruit and other seasonally available food. Acute hearing helps locate small prey beneath vegetation or snow. A fox may then leap and plunge its muzzle into the hiding place.

It usually forages alone but may live in a family group sharing a territory and breeding area. The tail helps with balance and communication and can cover the muzzle during rest in cold weather. Flexible behaviour allows foxes to use many different landscapes.
