Red-eared slider — size comparison — facts and sources

The pond slider is a freshwater species native to North America. The red-eared form illustrated here belongs to the subspecies Trachemys scripta elegans, naturally occurring in the south-central United States. Its native habitats include quiet waters, ponds, flooded areas and slow rivers. The red-eared subspecies has a red stripe behind the eye; other subspecies have different head markings. Pale lines also mark the head and neck, and the shell’s appearance changes as the turtle grows.

It does most of its feeding in water. Its diet includes aquatic animals and plants; young usually eat more animal food than adults. It often climbs onto logs, rocks and other objects above water to bask. When startled it quickly slides from its resting place and dives.

Females leave the water to lay eggs in soil. The species has been introduced to many regions outside its native range. Such populations may compete with local turtles for food and basking sites.
