The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus) is a lungless amphibian of damp North American deciduous-forest litter. Gas exchange occurs partly through the skin, making moist refuges important.
Some have a reddish dorsal stripe, while darker unstriped forms also occur. During dry periods it remains beneath wood, stones or within the ground.
It eats insects, arachnids, worms and other invertebrates. Females guard eggs on land. Development is direct: young do not pass through a free-swimming pond-larval stage.
Mierzymy odcinek: pysk → koniec ogona. Środek zakresu całkowitej długości 5,7–12,7 cm z ADW; nie średnia populacji. Wysokość postawy wynika z proporcji ilustracji. Przód jest przybliżoną projekcją.
