The raccoon (Procyon lotor) is an omnivorous mammal native to North and Central America. It inhabits forests, wetlands and riverside scrub, as well as farmland and cities. A dark eye mask, bushy ringed tail and dexterous forepaws are distinctive.
It eats fruit, seeds, invertebrates and small vertebrates. Near water it may seek crayfish, frogs and other small animals; near people it also uses accessible scraps. Sensitive fingers help examine food surfaces and shapes, while a varied diet supports use of different habitats.
Chiefly active after dark, it spends the day in a tree hollow, burrow or sheltered part of a building. Females care for young and introduce them to independent feeding. Introduced populations occur outside its native range; their effects on local fauna depend partly on available prey.
