The Indian python is a large constrictor originating in South Asia. It occurs in India among other countries, occupying forests, grasslands and river valleys. Brown patches cover its pale body background, helping break up its massive outline among plants and shaded ground.
It hunts mammals, birds and other vertebrates. It often waits in hiding and subdues captured prey with body coils. It uses sheltered places for resting and temperature regulation. An adult may be several metres long.
The female lays eggs and remains coiled around them during incubation. Hatchlings begin independent lives. The name formerly also encompassed the Burmese python, but Python molurus and Python bivittatus are now treated as separate species.
