The pygmy sperm whale, Kogia breviceps, is a small deep-ocean cetacean. It has a stocky body, rounded head and small mouth. Usually alone or in small groups, its quiet surface behaviour makes it easily overlooked.
It chiefly eats squid, supplemented by fish. Threatened animals may release dark digestive fluid to form a screen in the water. With few direct observations, much dietary and anatomical knowledge comes from dead specimens.
