Eurasian pygmy shrew — size comparison — facts and sources

The Eurasian pygmy shrew lives in dense vegetation in Europe and northern Asia. Forest-floor plants, field edges, peatlands and scrub provide cover from predators.

It eats small insects, spiders and other invertebrates. High energy needs require repeated feeding throughout the day and night, alternating short trips with rest. It remains active in winter, including beneath snow.

Usually solitary, it defends an area. Numbers depend on small-prey availability; it is itself food for owls and small mammalian predators.
