Pygmy right whale — size comparison — facts and sources

The pygmy right whale inhabits temperate and subantarctic Southern Hemisphere waters. A small baleen whale, it has a darker back, paler underside and small dorsal fin. Despite its English name, it does not belong to the true right-whale family.

It filters copepods and small krill from water. Rarely seen at sea and usually alone, its movements and behaviour remain poorly understood. Studies of stranded specimens provide important information.
