Pygmy beaked whale — size comparison — facts and sources

Known chiefly from the eastern tropical Pacific, the pygmy beaked whale is among the smallest members of its genus. Specimens from Peru supported the species description; later finds also indicated occurrence elsewhere in the Pacific.

A slender, short beak and small dorsal fin are characteristic. Living biology is poorly understood; cephalopods and fish are presumed food. Collected specimens allowed species description, but social interactions and regular migrations remain poorly documented.
