Proboscis monkey — size comparison — facts and sources
The proboscis monkey occurs only on Borneo and is closely associated with riverine forests, swamps and mangroves. Adult males have a large, pendulous nose that contributes to vocal resonance. A complex stomach allows plant food, chiefly leaves, to ferment. The male’s head and shoulders are especially reddish, while the limbs and long tail remain grey.
Fruit, seeds and small amounts of invertebrates supplement its diet. It is diurnal, social and chiefly arboreal, but can also swim and dive. Partial webbing between the digits contributes to its adaptations to a habitat crossed by water.
