The pool frog is among Europe’s smaller green frogs. Continental populations often have green backs, but some individuals are brown. Dark spots, a pale stripe and yellowish thigh pattern may help, but identification requires several features together.

It prefers vegetated waters with sunny banks. Breeding males use paired vocal sacs. It may hybridise with the marsh frog, contributing to the edible frog’s origins.

Its food consists of insects and other small invertebrates.
