The gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer) is a constrictor of open North American habitats. It uses fields, scrub and burrows. Darker blotches mark its pale body, whose strength allows it to subdue prey by coiling around it.
It actively searches small-mammal burrows and trails. It can also climb and swim.
It eats chiefly rodents, as well as birds, eggs and other animals. It is usually solitary outside breeding.
Środek opisanego zakresu długości 180–275 cm. Dane ADW nie są średnią wszystkich populacji. W obu ujęciach tułów pozostaje w pozycji bocznej, z lekkimi wygięciami. W drugim ujęciu tylko końcowy odcinek szyi i głowa są zwrócone do patrzącego. Skalę obu wersji ustalono z tej samej długości ciała i odpowiadającego sobie odcinka tułowia.
