Pine marten — size comparison — facts and sources

The pine marten uses several forest levels: it hunts on the ground and moves proficiently through trees. It selects sheltered resting places, including cavities. Access to retreats and varied vegetation helps it exploit an extensive territory.

It hunts small mammals and birds but also eats invertebrates and fruit. Dietary composition changes with season and region. Smell is important in finding food. Scent marks convey information to others without a direct encounter.

It usually lives alone, and the female cares for young in a safe retreat. Embryonic development is delayed, separating mating and birth. Woodland connections between larger forest patches facilitate movement.
