Perrin’s beaked whale — size comparison — facts and sources

Perrin’s beaked whale was described from specimens found off California. Some were initially assigned to Hector’s beaked whale; anatomical and genetic comparisons revealed a separate species. Its short beak and dark back resemble other Mesoplodon whales.

Knowledge comes from very few examined animals. Cephalopods and fish are considered probable prey, but their dietary proportions are poorly established. Group size, seasonal movements and reproduction remain little understood.
